Zsolt Szokolai studied History, Geography and Urban development, specialised in culture-led urban renewal. He started his carreer in Hungary in regional development and EU Structural Funds management. In 2004-05 he participated in the preparation of the Pécs European Capital of Culture project. In 2010 he moved to Brussels and started to work for the European Commission, first as policy officer for urban development, then as programme manager of 5 INTERREG cross-border cooperation programmes in Central-Europe and in the Balkans. Since 2017 he has been working in the Cultural Policy unit of the Directorate General for Education and Culture. Currently he is in charge of the Music Moves Europe initiative of the Commission to promote diverse, sustainable and competitive European music ecosystem. He is also charged with the development of the cultural cooperation in the Western-Balkans.
